Henry Opitz of the Colorado Rockies was one tough customer on the hill today. He blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 on 4 hits, registering 12 strikeouts and no walks.
"When he's on, he's tough to hit," said the St. Louis manager after the game. "He's just a bulldog out there."
This season Opitz has worked 195.2 innings with 140 strikeouts en route to a 10-11 record and a 4.05 ERA.

St. Louis team officials speculated whether star reliever David Huddle would be scratched from today's ballgame after he suffered a tender shoulder in yesterday's matchup with the Philadelphia Phillies. Huddle denied reports that he would miss a lot of time, but added that he would not risk further injury by playing.
Huddle has gone to the hill for 48 relief appearances this season, nailing down 1 save while notching a 2-4 record with a 9.47 ERA. The St. Louis reliever has limited opposing batters to a .337 batting average.

 | Sunday, August 8th, 2021: St. Louis Draws Blanks Against Vargas
In an impressive mound performance, Pablo Vargas of the Philadelphia Phillies checked the St. Louis Cardinals on a 5-hitter and held them scoreless.
"He was getting ahead of us and keeping the ball off the plate," according to the St. Louis manager.
"Vargas kept us confused the whole game."
The Philadelphia hurler rang up 5 strikeouts and issued no walks in his 6-0 shutout victory.
Year-to-date Vargas has made 9 starts and put up a 5-1 won-lost record with a 3.38 ERA. In 53.1 innings he has allowed 52 hits, walked 3 and struck out 39.
